Short answer
Start with the code on the display. Most Navien calls trace to ignition or flame codes (E003, E012), overheating from a clogged inlet filter or scale (E016, E030), blocked venting or a dirty air filter (E110), or a flush reminder (E760). Owners can check gas, power, filters and vent terminals. Sensors, boards, valves and gas work need a pro.
Key facts
- Navien's residential NPE-A2 warranty covers the heat exchanger for 15 years, parts for 5 years and labor for 1 year when recirculation is standard or controlled.[2]
- Navien's warranty excludes damage from hard water deposits, lime or mineral build-up, and products installed by a non-licensed installer.[2]
- Navien's NPE-2 manual says to clean the air intake filter every 3 to 4 months; a clogged one can stop the unit with code 110.[1]
Safety first
If you smell gas near the unit, skip every check on this page. Leave on foot, avoid anything that can spark, and call the gas utility and 911 from a safe place[3].
The checks below stay outside the cover: valves, power, the two filters Navien designed for owners to clean, the vent terminals outside, and a single power cycle. Anything behind the front panel, and any gas or electrical work, belongs to a licensed plumber or a technician trained on Navien equipment.
This page covers the NPE-2 condensing tankless line (NPE-A2 and NPE-S2), the most common Navien water heater in homes. A2 models have a built-in buffer tank and recirculation pump; S2 models do not[1]. For the full code list, see Navien error codes.
Common problems by symptom
| Symptom | Likely code | Common causes | Safe owner check | Pro work |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| No hot water, burner will not light | E003 | Gas valve closed, gas service off, empty propane tank, low gas pressure | Other gas appliances work; power cycle once; a plumber checks the gas valve | Gas pressure test, igniter or flame rod |
| Hot water, then cold, then the unit stops | E012 | Low or unstable gas supply, dirty air intake filter, vent problem | Clean the air intake filter per the manual | Gas supply and vent diagnosis |
| Unit shuts down hot, often in hard water | E016, E030 | Clogged cold water inlet filter, scale in the heat exchanger | Clean the inlet filter; schedule a flush | Descaling, sensor and exhaust checks |
| Stops after snow, wind or a long idle period | E110 | Blocked exhaust or intake terminal, dirty air filter | Clear the outside terminals; clean the air filter | Vent repair if it returns |
| Display asks for service | E760 | Flush or service reminder | Book a flush | Flush and descale |
| Fan noise, then shutdown | E109 | Fan motor fault, dirty air filter | Clean the air filter | Fan replacement |
| Code naming a sensor, valve or board | E407, E421, E434, E439, E515 and similar | Failed part | None beyond one power cycle | Diagnosis and part replacement |
Code meanings are our paraphrase of Navien's NPE-2 manual, not Navien's text[1]. Note that E407 is the outlet water sensor and E515 is the main circuit board[1]. Some websites mix those up, and they are very different parts.
What a homeowner can safely check
1. Gas, water and power. Check that other gas appliances in the house work (if none do, the gas service may be off: call your gas utility), that the cold water supply valve is open, and that the unit has power. Opening or adjusting the gas valve to the unit is a job for a licensed plumber. Tankless units need electricity for the fan and controls, even on gas.
2. The cold water inlet filter. Navien's manual shows owners how to drain the unit and remove, rinse and reinsert this filter[1]. A clogged inlet filter restricts flow and is tied to the overheating codes E016 and E030[1]. A2 models also have a recirculation inlet filter, cleaned the same way[1].
3. The air intake filter. Navien says to clean it every 3 to 4 months, and that a filter clogged by dust or lint will stop the unit and show code 110[1]. This matters most in garages, laundry rooms and dusty basements.
4. The vent terminals outside. Look for snow, leaves, nests or anything blocking the intake or exhaust. Clear what you can reach safely from the ground.
5. One power cycle. Turn the unit off and back on once. If the code returns, stop and call. Repeated resets can hide a real fault.
Do not open the front cover, adjust gas settings or DIP switches, or work on the vent pipe. Code E762 means a vent pipe is not seated properly, and codes E773 and E788 mean the gas type does not match the settings[1]. Turn the unit off for those and call a pro.
Hard water and scale
Scale is the slow cause behind many Navien repair calls. Minerals in hard water coat the inside of the heat exchanger, reduce flow and push temperatures up until an overheat code trips. E760 is Navien's reminder that a flush is due[1]. Navien calls flushing the heat exchanger "a somewhat complicated procedure," advises calling an authorized technician if you are unsure of any step, and warns that improper maintenance can void the warranty[1]. See how to descale a tankless water heater.
What needs a licensed plumber or Navien-trained technician
- Any gas work: gas pressure, gas valve, gas type settings, or gas line sizing.
- Venting: repairs, re-routing, or a vent that is loose or damaged.
- Anything behind the front cover: igniter, flame rod, sensors, fan, flow parts, pump, circuit board.
- Overheat codes that return after the inlet filter is clean.
- Water leaking from inside the cabinet.
Warranty basics
Navien's warranty page for the NPE-A2 lists these residential terms, counted from the date of original installation[2]:
| Use | Heat exchanger | Parts | Labor |
|---|---|---|---|
| Residential, standard or controlled recirculation | 15 years | 5 years | 1 year |
| Residential, uncontrolled recirculation | 5 years | 3 years | 1 year |
| Commercial or combination heating, standard or controlled recirculation | 8 years | 5 years | 1 year |
"Uncontrolled" recirculation means a pump that runs without a timer, sensor or on-demand control. That one detail can cut heat exchanger coverage from 15 years to 5[2].
Three warranty conditions trip up homeowners[2]:
- Licensed installer. Products installed by a non-licensed installer, or bought from a supplier Navien has not authorized, are not covered.
- Scale. Damage from hard water deposits, lime or mineral build-up is excluded. Regular flushing protects both the unit and the coverage.
- Call Navien first. Failing to contact Navien Tech Support while in front of the product can invalidate a claim.
Check the warranty page for your exact model, because terms differ by series. Use our Navien age decoder to estimate when the unit was made.
Repair or replace?
Rheem's rule of thumb applies to any brand: if a repair costs more than 50% of a new unit, replacement usually wins, and tankless units can last 15 to 20+ years with care[5]. HomeGuide's national figures (August 2025) put tankless repairs at $300 to $1,300, a heat exchanger replacement at $600 to $1,300, and a flush and descale at $75 to $300[4]. A heat exchanger still under warranty changes that math, so check coverage before you decide. See repair or replace.
When to call a pro
- E003 or E012 that returns after one power cycle with gas confirmed on.
- E762, E773 or E788: turn the unit off and call.
- Any sensor, valve, pump, fan or board code, or any overheat code that returns after the filters are clean.
- A flush, if you are not comfortable isolating valves and running a pump and cleaning solution.
More questions
Do I have to call Navien before a plumber replaces a part under warranty?
Navien's warranty says a claim can be invalidated if Navien Tech Support was not contacted first while someone is in front of the unit. Ask your plumber to make that call during the visit. The NPE-2 manual lists Navien support at 1-800-519-8794.
Does running my Navien above 140 F change the warranty?
Yes. The NPE-2 manual says Commercial Mode allows water up to 185 F, and the commercial warranty applies when that mode is used. For most homes, a residential setting well below that is enough; see our guide to the best temperature setting.
